The Half Nobody Grades
A panel of seventeen IT practitioners — CIOs, senior professionals, IT managers across healthcare, government, consulting, education, and the military — spent four rounds of a Delphi study describing the problems they actually solve at work. When the results were coded, a single finding stopped the conversation: exactly half of the problems were people and process issues, not technology issues. The profession had spent decades training exclusively for the technical half. This was not a surprise to the practitioners. It was a surprise only to the programs that credentialed them.
What the panel contributed
Eighteen real scenarios from eleven industries: a hotel breach that turned out to be an inside job, a healthcare system entangled in HIPAA obligations no one had read, a government network failure that was actually a policy dispute. Problems disguised as technology until someone with judgment looked at them.
What credentials measure
The technical half. Routing protocols, security certifications, code syntax, exam rubrics self-referentially testing the rubric. Not wrong — necessary. But half.
Why the other half was never designed for
Behavioral skills, the panel kept saying, cannot be taught through traditional methods. Communication, stakeholder navigation, organizational culture, the politics of a room. These must be experienced. No lecture covers them. No multiple-choice question touches them.
What AI changes and what it doesn't
AI handles the technical half with increasing competence. The construction phase of the work — generating the code, drafting the policy, analyzing the log — is increasingly automatable. What remains is entirely the unmeasured half: negotiating the stakeholder's vision, understanding the organizational context, deciding who is accountable when the output is wrong.
The real question
The credential was always grading on fifty percent of the exam. That was a manageable gap when the other fifty percent required a practitioner's time to close. It is no longer manageable when the tool produces the graded half on demand. What we did not measure is now what we most need to form.
